GLIDEWELL, Robert - 1880

Source: Greencastle Star 5 June 1880 p 1

A few weeks since we noted the death of Andrew Sigler and only last week, May 28 – Judge Robert Glidewell at the advanced age of 88 years, passed off. Judge Glidewell was one of the oldest men in our vicinity and perhaps a settler in the county before any now living. He came to Indiana in less than five years after it became a state in 1821 and has spent the larger part of his life in this immediate vicinity. When first he set foot on the spot where the beautiful city of Greencastle now stand there was no city here but the primeval forest thro whose dark and dense shade the deer and bear roamed at will. He has, therefore witnessed the growth and development of the country in all its degrees. He has been twice married and was the father of 12 children – one by the father of 12 children – one by the first marriage and 11 by the second, six of whom survive him. Both his wives preceded him to the spirit land. His first wife’s name was Sarah Hansel. She died Dec 29, 1881 (sic – perhaps 31). His second was named Jane Breese. She died in October 1845. Robert Glidewell was a man of more than ordinary talent. He was a lawyer by profession and filled the Judge’s bench in this county for some time during the period that the probate system was in force. His religious proclivities were rather inclined to the doctrine of a universal salvation for all men. He was a very hospitable man. Soon the last of these octogenarians will have passed away. May their sons be inspired by the same patriotic devotion to our beloved country and her institutions that so long burned upon the altar of their father’s hearts. - transcribed by kbz
